Ecological and Prevention Day – 2010 Edition

Dear Madam, Dear Sir,

Autumn.... The wonderful season of multicolored leaves twirling in the wind! Our most tender childhood memories remind us of those unforgettable games in piles of leaves which suddenly became the playground of choice. Remember for a moment how beautiful autumn is in the countryside, the leaves changing color, the birds migrating south and flying away into the sky announcing the change of season. We had a few weeks to enjoy this beautiful fall season before the arrival of winter. Unfortunately, for children of economically disadvantaged urban areas, these colorful days do not have the same meaning as for young affluent children. Most of them do not have the chance to experience extraordinary days of color outside the city. These underprivileged children rarely have the opportunity to participate in cultural activities that are essential to their social, emotional and psychological development. For this reason, the Family Resources Center of Quebec (F.R.C.Q.) organizes the Ecological and Preventive Day that provides underprivileged children the chance to escape their daily lives and participate at a country escape.

Since its founding, 18 years ago, the F.R.C.Q. is involved in the community to help families in need. The Center organizes educational and recreational activities, such as the Ecological and Preventive Day every year, the event allows young people aged between 9 and 10 years to learn while having fun. They have the opportunity to go hiking, to learn survival skills and how to use a compass. Specialized facilitators share with them the joys of nature and the importance of respecting the environment. These poor children will have the opportunity, through these memorable days, to break their isolation and interact with others. It has a great impact on their self-esteem, creativity, respect for others and the planet.

Every fall, 120 underprivileged children from the regions of Montreal and Quebec have the opportunity to participate in this great day that they will remember for a long time. For them, it is an unexpected adventure they never thought they would experience. Thanks to you, the children will leave with not only memories but also with several gifts such as clothes, compasses, books, food and many other surprises they will enjoy!

In fall 2009, the Ecological and Prevention Day took place for, 60 kids from the Barclay (Parc Extension) school in Montreal escaped the city on October 8 to enjoy a day at Camp Bruchési in the Laurentians. The other 60 students, from the schools Versant Notre-Dame-de-Foy and Ste-Genevieve, took their trip on October 13 and relished in the brilliant landscapes of Camp « O » Carrefour in St-Pierre-de-Île-d’Orléans.

> This fall, on Tuesday, September 28rd, 2010, sixty (60) youngsters from the Quebec region will make an escapade at the «Le Saisonnier» Camp, on 75 Brulé road in Lac Beauport.
